Time Management

Time Management is the use of skills, tools and techniques to accomplish goals with effective utilisation of time. It means organising and execution of projects with clear priorities and understanding of time and value relationship.

In the earlier days people managed their time and priorities with notes and checklists .Later calendars and appointment books were used. Today, time has become very precious as everybody tries to accomplish more and more in the minimum possible time to ahead of competition. Time management therefore has become an important factor contributing to success or failure of individuals and enterprises.

Managing time requires understanding goals, priorities of activities, assigning values to each activity and determining the cost in terms of time spent. In short we need to evaluate how much value we are getting out of a task compared to time spent on it.

In addition, time management deals with setting goals or targets toward which time and energy would be directed in harmony with values.

Time management also involves long term and short term planning of time available and time allocation to activities of value to accomplish the goals you set out to achieve.

In order to manage time you need to manage yourself, your physical and mental skills and tools effectively. You also need to manage your relationships in such a way that you do not waste our time and energies in conflicts and frustration.

Time management is not just for managing time effectively but for ensuring that we achieve our goals. It is therefore wise to ask yourself if each activity you are doing is contributing to our moving closer to your goals or not. If not it is best to avoid such wasteful activities even if it means saying no to people.
